If you set up Alerts for Severity 16 you may receive the following alert:

SQL Server Alert System: 'Severity 016' occurred on

DATE/TIME: 07/10/2014 15:30:43

DESCRIPTION: The operating system returned the error ‘3(The system cannot find the path specified.)’ while attempting ‘DeleteFile’ on ‘E:\SQL_Backup\RestoreCheckpointDB17.CKP’.

COMMENT: (None)

JOB RUN: (None)

Issue

SQL Server creates a ckp file in the default backup location during a restore encase it gets interrupted, this allows for RESTORE WITH RESTART commands.

Cause

Default Backup location doesn’t exist, in the above example E:\SQL_Backup does not exist or SQL Server does havent the necessary permissions to it.

Solution

If the folder exists, ensure the SQL Server Service account has write permissions to it.

If the folder doesn’t exist, update the default backup location to the correct path (MSSQLTips – changing the default SQL Server Backup Folder)
