Adding a Cumulative Update To a SQL Server 2012 Install
SQL Server 2012 ISO has come with SP1 for a while now. But we still have 8 CU at present (The latest coming out in Jan of this year).
To install a CU along during your install follow these steps.
Download your ISO to a directory. (For me this is “C:\Software\SQL Server 2012\”)
Download the CU / Patch you want to install. For me that was CU 8
Extract your zip file to the location that the SQL Server install will pick it up from
For me this is “C:\Software\SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU”
You get asked if you want to run this file
You’ll then get notified that you are about to unzip some files.
Pick your location to Extract to:
Select the … to pick the location
The app will then extract the file to the location
Hopefully you will the see the Successfully unzipped notification
This should give you a exe file you can now delete the zip file or save it to a location of your choice.
Now we want to install SQL Server and link to that folder with CU 8.
To do so you need run the setup.exe with some switches those being
Guess what that does!
/UpdateSource=”\\DC\Software\SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU”
setup.exe /Action=Install /UpdateSource=”\\DC\Software\SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU”
Note the .\setup.exe is due to dot sourcing in PowerShell
Points to the folder with the CU we extracted on the DC server earlier.
We then get the UAC notification
Here we are just following the normal Install steps
Here is where we can confirm the update is being installed! As the Product update page should show the HotFix
From here. Simply follow on the steps you would normally to install.
